In the fourth-generation Haldex system, the N373 valve plays a crucial role in regulating oil pressure. This pressure controls the multi-plate clutch, which is responsible for engaging the rear axle drive. It operates based on signals from the control unit, allowing the drive to dynamically adapt to road conditions. Its proper functioning directly impacts how effectively and smoothly your 4x4 system performs.
The N373 valve is generally a durable component of the Haldex system and rarely fails. However, contamination or wear can cause it to malfunction, resulting in drive slip or, most commonly, noticeable jerks when turning.
When we check the N373 valve, here's what we look for:
Whether the valve is free from contamination like metal shavings, sludge, or hard metal debris.
The coil's resistance – it should be around 3 Ohms.
Whether the coil has a short to ground (or the housing).
The condition of the O-rings, which are crucial for the valve's seal.
If oil isn't flowing correctly through the valve, the Haldex clutch won't get the right hydraulic pressure it needs to engage properly under load. This can lead to the clutch slipping or jerking when the rear axle kicks in, especially during turns. Your ABS/ASC/TCS system will then pick up that the front wheels are spinning faster than the rear, which is a no-go when the Haldex clutch is engaged. Ultimately, you'll get error codes for both the clutch and the N373 control valve.
⚠️ WARNING – A faulty Haldex pre-charge pump (V181) that isn't delivering proper oil pressure can cause these exact same symptoms. You can usually confirm this by checking its resistance, which should be between 5 and 8 ohms.
⚠️ WARNING – A damaged control unit can also trigger valve errors if it's incorrectly reading the valve's operating parameters.
Common error codes (in practice, it is the controller’s valve control circuit that malfunctions, not the valve itself):
- 02248 – Clutch engagement angle control valve (N373) – Malfunction
- 02248 – Clutch engagement angle control valve (N373) – Intermittent fault
- 02248 – Clutch engagement angle control valve (N373) – 012 – Electrical fault in circuit
- 01324 – All-wheel drive control module (J492) – 004 – No signal/communication
- 65535 – Internal control module memory error – 00-10 – Intermittent fault
- 16347 – Control module – EEPROM error – 014 – Malfunction – Intermittent fault
- 00003 – Control module – 014 – Malfunction – Intermittent fault / Faulty control module – Sporadic
